ASUS officially unveiled their FonePad over at Mobile World Congress which you could say is an upgrade over their Nexus 7 in the sense that you can make calls and send text messages with it.
The ASUS FonePad is one of the first Android 4.1 Jelly Bean devices announced to use one of Intel’s latest mobile Atom processors. This phablet uses a single-core 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 that supports HyperThreading so in effect, it virtually gets two cores. It also uses the PowerVR SGX540 GPU along with 1GB RAM and 16GB internal storage with option for a microSD.
The FonePad features a 7-inch 1,280 x 800 IPS display with a smooth metal back in silver or gold colors, a different take from the Nexus 7’s dimpled back. It has a 3-megapixel rear camera which can record 720p HD videos and a 1.2 megapixel front one.
Unlike the Nexus 7 with 3G, the FonePad has full telephony support along with HSPA+ mobile data speeds. Enhancements include a built-in noise-canceling digital microphone and speakers powered by ASUS SonicMaster audio technology. It also packs a 4,270 mAh battery which is said to go up to nine hours, close to what you can get from the iPad.
Availability is still unknown but ASUS gave this a US price of $249 which is just over Php10k when converted to peso. Of course, we all know it won’t be that low when ASUS decides to ship it here but still, I’m thinking it will be one of the most affordable decent 7-inch phablets around.
