At the Samsung SEA Forum in Jakarta, we saw the new Series 7 Chronos Notebook that was introduced during CES 2013 early this year. It’s a high-performance 15.6” notebook with a surprisingly high battery stamina, up to 11 hours Samsung claims.
This 15-incher sports a Full HD resolution on a 10-point multitouch display panel so it’s Windows 8-ready although we were told that a non-touchscreen version is also available. The display also has a 178° wide viewing angle and 300 nit brightness.
It has an all-aluminum finish from the lid to its body and even its backlit keyboard which also includes a full Number pad set of keys. The clickpad is comfortably big with the click buttons seamlessly integrated to it.
Powering the new Series 7 Chronos is a 3rd-generation Intel Corei i7 quad-core processor along with an AMD Radeon HD 8870M discrete graphics. RAM starts at 4GB and goes up to 16GB to go with 1TB of hard disk storage. It also comes with a new software solution called RAMaccelerator that provides up to 150% increase in app speed.
This notebook caters to professionals especially those who does a lot of music and video editing with its JBL optimized speakers. It is also equipped with an HD webcam, and the full standard ports including 2 USB 3.0 ports. What’s missing is an optical drive which is quite unusual for a laptop this size.
What made this notebook interesting is the 11-hour battery life claim. We always take the listed battery life with a grain of salt and a good rule of thumb based on experience is to shave 2 hours from it. However, a 9 or even a 7-hour battery life is already good for a notebook of this size and power. Maybe we could do an actual testing of this laptop as I still can’t believe the stamina of this one.
The new Samsung Series 7 Chronos will be available starting next month. No local pricing has been announced yet but global price pegs this at a cool US$1,200.
